Instructions
- In a bowl, whisk together flour, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, baking soda, and salt.
- In a separate bowl, cream together the butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add molasses and egg to the butter mixture and mix until combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms.
- Chill the dough for at least 1 hour in the refrigerator.
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick.
- Cut out shapes using cookie cutters and place them on a baking sheet.
- Bake for 8-10 minutes or until the edges are firm.
- Let the cookies cool completely before decorating with royal icing.
- To make royal icing, mix powdered sugar, meringue powder, and water until smooth and stiff peaks form.
- Decorate the cooled cookies with royal icing as desired.
